Oops:Primer
Hey all, I’m Sam but better known as Ashanti on MTGO. I want to share with you my knowledge about the archetype Oops! All Spells.
With the recent additions of Modern Horizons 3, the deck consistency improved incredibly high! Now we have a total of TWELVE black untapped lands, which is huge! Additionally to that, the white new ones have front spells that we always want to cast, if necessary!
The deck is very explosive and once you go off you win on the same turn!
I think the deck has a combo that's is quite simple, easy to learn and will reward you a lot if you understand how to play around hate pieces post sideboard.
Before we get into the deck I also want to point out somehthing really important: Our card density has also improved, so that we can finally play Beseech the Mirror as our 9th-12th wincon. This version has 67 cards in the maindeck, so that we can improve as muchas possible our odds to have 2 lands, 1 mana rock and a rouge or Beseech the Mirror to win. The biggest problem was that the deck before MH3 was playing all the untapped MDFC lands of every color, so it wasn't possible to play Beseech the Mirror. Now there's no need to play different colors and we can play Black and white lands.
Decklist: Oops, All Spells
The combo:
We cast a Rouge (Undercity Informer or Balustrade Spy) and target us to mill our entire deck, because all our "lands" are MDFC, which are spells on their front side and lands on the back.
The result of this action will trigger three abilities and three important actions.
Triggers:
- Each Creeping Chill's will trigger the ability from their card and drain our Opp for 3.
- Narcomoebas will come in to the battlefield.
- As 1/1s ETB each sword of the meek will get attached to one of 1/1 creature.
In a normal scenario I recommend you to sequence like this:
- Resolve each Creeping Chill trigger to drain Opp
- Exile 3 mana rocks (artifacts) from your graveyard to return Salvage Titan to hand.
- Bring in the first Narcomoeba, which bring the 3 swords of the meek attached to it, then bring in the second one.
- We cast Salvage Titan with the alternative cost by sacking the 3 swords, and this will trigger the comeback of our Vengevines, because we cast our 2nd creature spell.
Ideal scenario would be: 12 damage from Creeping Chill and if all Vengevines hit 16 so total damage would be 28.
Depending on the meta you can choose different builds, as for example trim the Thoracle package and maindeck Pact of negation. The Thoracle package (Thassa's Oracle, Memory Journey, Unearth and Jack-o'-Lantern) is a legit wincon designed to win against decks were it was hard to push the damage through as they set up a board really fast (Yawg, Nadu, Affy, etc), but also so that we can play around 1 single GY crypt hate card or White Sanctifier. We mill us and when Opp responds cracking for example their Reliq of Progenitus we use the flashback of Journey and putting on top Thoracle+pentad prism for example, that will depend on the lands that you have on board. In case you think that the Thoracle package is really not good just cut it and play more Static Prison/PONs or Fragmentize, or even the 4th Belcher is a good choice.
The real enemies are Dauthi Voidwalker, Endurance, Leyline of the Void and Unlicensed Hearse right now as they are being played a lot in the main deck, so having an answer is great. With the recent addition of MH3 the manabase is so much better! The white lands have actually spells that we do want do I recommend to stay on Orzov.
Tips:
Mulligan agressively
London mulligan is our best friend. We need a Rogue + 4 mana, so any combination (2 lands + Pentad Prisim or 3 lands + Talisman) is perfect. So if your first 7,6,5 or even 4 don't accomplish those conditions just mulligan, going lower is not good.
Don’t be afraid to mull very aggressively.
Self Mill > Belcher
Try to go for the Rouge mill plan over Belcher, as it can kill as fastest on T4 and this might be too slow, so even if you have a turn 3 Belcher I would think twice if you want to keep it (ideally Belcher+PON).
Sideboard choices:
Static Prison and Fragmentize bhnb are our GY hate pieces. Removals are splitted, if you know your meta it’s probably better to choose the correct card but this is up to you. I prefer P Ending but Leyline of the Void might pop from nowhere.
Orim's Chant our white veil of summer. Great card, a lot of times it can also act as a time walk. Vs cascade it’s wonderful and if T3feri hits the board you can still request from you opp to have a double answer.
Thoracle plan can also play around vs Sanctifier en-Vec a creature that exiles a lot of our cards ( chills and Savage Titan).
Leyline of Sanctity protect us vs Endurance, Discard, GY that target a single player like Tormoyd crypt, Nihil Spellbomb.
Goblin Charbelcher alternative wincon that doesn't use the GY and attack our opp from a different angle.
How to Sideboard:
Ruby Storm
+3 static prison +2 Fragmentize + 2 Orim's Chant -2 Solar Transformer, 2 Land, 2 Informers
Scam
+4 leyline, +3 static prison +2 Fragmentize, -2 mana rocks, -1 land, Dauthi is strong, kolaghan's command makes belcher sketchy.
Amulet titan
+5 white removal, -2 rock, -2 land, -1 Beseech
UR Murktide
+2 Orims's Chant,+1 Belcher, +3 PONs, -2 Solar Transformer, 2 Land, 2 Informers
You might want a couple of Static Prisons, but that depends on how hard opponent mulligans to graveyard hate, most of the time they keep good hands and rely on counter magic, watch out for dress down, resolved belcher is a win most of the time
Burn
+4 leyline, +3-4 white removal, -2 land, -2 mana rock, -1 chill, -2 Rouge
Belcher is probably too slow, and they also wear/tear and smash to smithereens
UW Control
+2 Orim's Chant, +1 Belcher -1 land, cut the Thoracle package.
Hammertime
+4 w removal , +3x thoracle plan -1 belcher - 4 Pon - 1 rock, - 1 r land
Belcher is slow and I prefer to rely on Oops combo, they might play Sanctifier or Lion Sash and we can win with Thassa there.
Creativity
+2 Fragmentize +2 Belcher -1 Chill -1 Land - mana rock -1 Rouge, if they bring in Black Leyline you will know which is the play , but they are a quite slow
Yawgmoth
+4 leyline, 2 Pending -1 mana rock, -1 land, -2 belcher
4c Money
+2 Belcher,+2 silence -1 mana rock, -1-2 spy, -1 chill, 1-2 lands I like to play that similar than UW matches
Shadow
+4 leyline, -1 mana rocks, -1 Red lands, -1 chill, -1 Rouge
strong argument to cut -2 belcher instead of -1 spy if there are more than 1 kolaghans. Be intelligent and play around Drown in the loch. Remember that they play Dress down , too.
Rhinos
+2 Orim's Chant, +4 w Leyline, -2 land, -2 mana rocks, -1 chill, -2 belcher belcher is the one card vulnerable to forces and they don’t interact well with graveyard outside of endurance usually
Living end
+4 leyline, +,2 Silence -1 mana rocks, -1 land, -1 chill, -2 belcher grief and endurance -> leyline is good, nothing you can do about faerie macabre but i haven't seen that one recently
Scapeshift (5c omnath)
+4 leyline, -1 mana rock, -1 land, -1 chill, -2 belcher
Tron
+4 white removal, +2 Orim's Chant -1-2 mana rock, -1-2 land,
Reanimator
+4 leyline, +2-4 white removal, -2 mana rocks, -1-2 lands, -2 chill, -2-3 spy They run leyline of the void a lot so belcher is great
Eldrazi tron
+4 white removal, -1 mana rock, -1 chill, -2 belcher
Belcher
+4 leyline,+2 Orim's Chant -Thoracle package, -1 belcher
Oops is faster so we should be good, on the draw Orim's chant can be great.
Mill
+4 leyline, +0-4 white removal, -0-2 mana rocks, -1-2 lands, -1-2 chill, -2 spy
no need to combo, just play everything you can and keep on attacking, while they are milling you eventually things will trigger naturally.
Affinity
+4 pact, +2-4 white removal, -1-2 mana rocks, -1-2 lands, -1 chill, -2 spy
Dredge
+4 leyline, -1-2 mana rock, -1 land, -1-2 belcher
if they have a great start there isn't much to do
Humans
+4 white removal, -1-2 mana rock, -1 land, -2 belcher
Merfolk
+0-4 white removal, -1-2 mana rock, -1-2 lands, -1-2 chill
Final notes:
- Again, this deck rewards your mulligans, so do it very aggressively. You should look for hands with 2 lands , 1 Spy and 1 rock.
- Postboard, don’t take Phantasmorigan out, it cleans your hand when you draw Vengevines or swords.
